None so frenzied in the tavern of the magi

Hafez

In all the monastery of the magi there is none so frenzied as I:

my cloak in pawn for wine in one place, my book in another.

The heart, which is a royal mirror, has gathered dust;

I ask of God the company of someone bright of mind.

I have repented at the hand of the wine-selling idol

that I will drink no wine again without the face of one who graces the feast.

If the narcissus boasted of your eye's ways, do not be offended:

people of vision do not follow the blind.

Perhaps the candle can bring the telling of this tale to its tongue;

otherwise the moth has no care for words.

I have run streams from my eyes into my lap, in hope that

they will seat in my embrace one tall as a cypress.

Bring the ship of wine, for without the Friend's face

every corner of my eye has become a sea from the heart's grief.

Speak no word of others to me, who worship the beloved,

for, but for that one and my cup of wine, I care for no one.

How well this saying pleased me, which at dawn

a Christian was speaking at a tavern door with tambourine and reed:

"If being a Muslim is what Hafez has,

alas, if after today there should come a tomorrow."

A nightingale held in its beak a rose petal of lovely colour,

and with that petal and its song it made sweet, piteous laments.

A star shone out and became the moon of the gathering,

became friend and companion to our startled heart.

At dawn the nightingale told its tale to the east wind:

"See what love for the rose's face has done to us!"

At dawn the nightingale told the breeze
