No one is free of that curl

Hafez

There is no one who has not fallen to that double curl;

on whose path is there no snare of trouble?

Since your eye steals hearts from those who sit in corners,

to follow you is no sin on our part.

Your face is surely the mirror of divine grace;

truly it is so, and in this there is no pretence.

The narcissus seeks the manner of your eye: what an eye!

Poor thing, it has no sense in its head and no shame in its eye.

For God's sake, do not comb your curl, for there is

not a night we do not quarrel a hundred times with the morning breeze.

Come back, for without your face, O heart-kindling candle,

there is no trace of light or joy in the gathering of friends.

Caring for strangers is the mark of a good name;

beloved, is this not the custom in your city?

Yesterday she was leaving, and I said, "Idol, keep your promise."

She said, "You are mistaken, sir: in this age there is no keeping faith."

If the Magian elder became my guide, what difference does it make?

There is no head without a secret from God.

What can the lover do but carry the burden of blame?

No hero has a shield against the arrow of fate.

In the zahid's cloister and the Sufi's retreat

there is no prayer-niche but the corner of your eyebrow.

O you who have sunk your claws into the heart-blood of Hafez,

have you no thought of the jealousy of the Quran and God?
