My prince, you walk so gracefully
Hafez
My prince, you walk so gracefully that I would die at your head and feet:
walk on with grace, for I would die before your lovely stature.
You had said, "When will you die before me?" Why the hurry?
You ask so sweetly that I would die before you even ask.
I am a lover, hungover and cast out: where is the idol who pours the wine?
Tell her to come strolling, so I may die before that tall cypress.
She for whom I have been sick with longing for a lifetime,
tell her to cast one glance, so I may die before those dark-blue eyes.
You have said your ruby lip gives both the pain and the cure:
now before the pain, now before the cure, I would die for you.
You walk along so gracefully, may the evil eye be far from your face!
In my head I hold the fancy of dying at your feet.
Though Hafez has no place in the privacy of your company,
O you whose every place is sweet, I would die before every place of yours.
