My pain comes from the friend

Hafez

My pain comes from the friend, and the cure as well;

the heart was given for him, and the soul as well.

That 'something' which they say is finer than beauty,

our friend has this, and has that as well.

Remember the one who, set on shedding our blood,

broke the promise, and the covenant as well.

Friends, I speak behind a veil;

it will be told in songs and stories as well.

Since the fortune of the nights of union came to an end,

the days of separation will pass as well.

Both worlds are a single gleam of his face;

I have told you: the seen and the hidden as well.

There is no trusting the work of the world,

nor, for that matter, the turning sky as well.

The lover does not fear the judge; bring wine,

nor, for that matter, the court's tribunal as well.

The morals officer knows that Hafez is a lover,

and the Asaf of Solomon's realm as well.
