Ghazal · 14th century

My heart's blood runs from my eyes

Hafez

From my eyes my heart's blood all runs down my face;

what can I say of all that runs from my eyes down my face?

Deep within our breast we have hidden a longing;

if our heart is blown to the winds, it is that longing that blows it.

The eastern sun would tear its robe in jealousy

if my moon, who nurtures love, went out in her tunic.

We have laid our face on the dust of the beloved's road;

it is only right that a friend should walk upon our face.

The water of my eyes is a flood, and whoever passes by,

even if his heart were made of stone, would be swept from his place.

Night and day we quarrel with the tears of our eyes

over why they should run as far as the head of her lane.

Hafez goes always to the tavern lane with a sincere heart,

as the Sufis of the cloister go, in purity.
