My heart and faith are gone

Hafez

My heart and faith are gone, and the heart-stealer rose up in reproach;

she said: "Do not sit with us, for well-being has risen and left you."

Whom have you heard of who sat happily for a moment at this banquet

and did not rise at the end of the company in regret?

If the candle, with its tongue, boasted of those laughing lips,

it rose up nightly before your lovers to pay the penalty.

In the meadow, the spring wind, from beside the rose and cypress,

rose up in devotion to that cheek and stature.

You passed by drunk, and among the secluded ones of heaven

a tumult like the resurrection rose up at the sight of you.

Before your walk it could not lift a foot for shame,

the proud cypress that rose up so vain of its height.

Hafez, throw off this cloak, that you may come out alive,

for the fire rose from the cloak of pretence and false miracles.
