My eye is your nest

Hafez

The portico of my eye's gazing-place is your nest:

be gracious and come down, for this house is your house.

With the grace of mole and down you stole the heart from the knowers;

wondrous subtleties lie beneath your snare and seed.

O nightingale, may your heart be glad in union with the rose of the dawn breeze,

for in the meadow every rose-song is your lover's song.

Refer the cure for the weakness of our heart to your lip,

for this ruby cordial is in your treasury.

In body I fall short of the good fortune of serving you,

but the very essence of my soul is the dust of your threshold.

I am not one to give the coin of my heart to every flirt;

the treasury door bears your seal and your mark.

What a marvel are you, O sweet-working royal rider,

that a wild colt like the heavens is tamed by your whip?

What of me, when even the conjuring sphere slips

at the tricks within the bag of your pretexts?

Now the heavens will set the songs of your gathering dancing,

for the poetry of sweet-tongued Hafez is your song.

A nightingale held in its beak a rose petal of lovely colour,

and with that petal and its song it made sweet, piteous laments.

A nightingale held a rose petal

A star shone out and became the moon of the gathering,

became friend and companion to our startled heart.

At dawn the nightingale told its tale to the east wind:

"See what love for the rose's face has done to us!"

At dawn the nightingale told the breeze
