My breath is spent

Hafez

My breath is spent, and my desire is not fulfilled by you;

alas, my fortune does not wake from its sleep.

The morning breeze threw some dust from her lane into my eyes,

so that now even the water of life does not catch my eye.

Until I take your tall form into my arms,

the tree of my hope and desire will bear no fruit.

Unless it is through our friend's heart-adorning face,

in no other way will this work be done.

My heart settled in your curl, for it saw a fine dark country there,

and no news comes from that suffering stranger.

From the thumb-ring of sincerity I have loosed a thousand arrows of prayer,

but what use? Not one of them strikes home.

I have the tale of my heart to tell the dawn breeze,

but with my luck, tonight the dawn does not come.

My life has passed away in this fancy, and still

the trouble of your black curl comes to no end.

Hafez's heart has grown so shy of everyone

that now it will not come out of the ring of your curl.
