My breast burned

Hafez

My breast burned with my heart's fire, in grief for the beloved;

there was a fire in this house, and the whole dwelling burned.

My body melted because the beloved was far away;

my soul burned in the fire of love for the beloved's face.

See my heart's burning: from all the fire of my tears, the candle's heart

last night burned for me in sympathy, like a moth.

It is no wonder that a friend should feel for me;

when I went out of myself, even the stranger's heart burned.

The water of the tavern carried off my cloak of piety;

the fire of the wine-house burned down the house of my reason.

My heart broke like a cup from the repentance I made;

like the tulip, my inmost heart burned without wine and the wine-store.

Say less of what is past and come back, for the pupil of my eye

pulled off its cloak and burned it in thanks.

Leave off the tale, Hafez, and drink wine a while,

for we did not sleep tonight, and the candle burned down with the story.
