Messenger of the true, tell

Hafez

O messenger of the true, tell us news of our beloved;

tell the rose's state to the nightingale who sings his tales.

We are confidants of the private room of intimacy; do not worry:

speak a friend's words to a friend.

When she tossed those musk-scattering curls,

what did she intend for us? For God's sake, tell.

Whoever said, "The dust of the Friend's door is balm for the eyes,"

tell him, "Say it to our eyes, as one who has seen."

The one who forbids us the tavern,

tell him, "Tell this story in the presence of my Pir."

If you should pass by that door of fortune again,

after your service and your prayers are offered, tell her.

Though we are bad, do not hold it against us;

tell the story of the beggar's sin in a kingly way.

Read that great one's letter to this poor man;

tell this beggar the tale of that king.

When she shook souls from the snare of her curl onto the dust,

what happened to that stranger of ours? O breeze, tell.

The story of the knowers of truth nourishes the soul:

go and ask a mystery, come and tell a tale.

Hafez, if they let you into her gathering,

drink wine, and for God's sake, give up pretence.
