May your beauty ever increase

Hafez

May your beauty be ever increasing;

may your face be the colour of tulips all year long.

In my head, the thought of your love,

every day there is, may it increase.

Every cypress that comes into the meadow,

may it bow down in service to your stature.

Any eye that is not enchanted by you,

may it, like the pearl of a tear, be drowned in blood.

May your eye, for the stealing of hearts,

be master of every art in working magic.

Wherever there is a heart in grief for you,

may it be without patience, without rest or calm.

May the stature of all the heart-stealers in the world

be bent like a nun before the alif of your stature.

Every heart that is empty of love for you,

may it be shut out from the circle of union with you.

Your ruby lip, which is the very soul of Hafez,

may it be far from the lips of the base.
