Majnun and the Memory of Layla

Attar

Someone called Majnun aside from the road

and said, ‘If you want Layla, ask for her hand.’

He said, ‘I never want a wife;

this weeping and wailing are enough for me.’

The man said, ‘Since you don’t want her at your side,

put all this madness out of your head.’

He said, ‘The memory of Layla is sweeter to me:

let the haughtiness be hers, and the cries of woe be mine.

The kernel of lovers’ love is remembrance;

whatever goes beyond it is only wind.

I am not one of those lovers who worship desire,

that I should empty my hand of the memory of the Friend.’

As long as the memory of another counts with you,

your remembrance of the Lord stays veiled.

When all your remembering is of the Lord,

then, as for Majnun, everything will be Layla to you.

A note for readers

A short tale from the first discourse of the Mosibat-name, the Book of Affliction. Majnun, the legendary lover driven mad by love for Layla, refuses to marry her: what he wants is not to possess her but to remember her. Attar draws the moral in the last two couplets: the remembrance of God should fill the heart as Layla filled Majnun’s.
