Like the rose, at your scent

Hafez

Like the rose, at every breath, at your scent I tear

the garment on my body from collar to hem.

The rose, it seems, saw your body in the garden,

and like a drunkard tore the garment on its own body.

From the hand of your sorrow I will hardly escape with my life,

but you carried my heart away from me with ease.

At the word of enemies you turned from your friend;

no one should turn enemy against a friend.

Your body in its garment is like wine in a cup;

your heart in your breast like iron in silver.

Rain tears, O candle, from your bloodshot eye,

for the burning of your heart is now plain to all.

Do not make it so that from my breast a scorching sigh

rises like smoke through the window.

Do not break my heart and cast it underfoot,

for it has made its home in the tip of your curl.

Since Hafez has bound his heart to your curl,

do not cast his affairs underfoot like this.
