Ghazal · 14th century

Last night she came, her face aflame

Hafez

Last night she came with her face aflame;

whose grieving heart, I wonder, had she burned this time?

The custom of slaying lovers and the art of stirring up the city

were a robe that had been tailored to her stature.

She held the souls of lovers to be wild rue for her face,

and had kindled the fire of her cheek for this very work.

Though she kept saying, "I will kill you wretchedly," I saw

that secretly she had a tender glance for me, the burned at heart.

The unbelief of her curl waylaid the road of faith, and that stone-hearted one

had lit a torch from her face along its way.

The heart gathered much blood in its hands, but the eye poured it out;

God, God, who squandered it, and who had stored it up?

Do not sell the beloved for the world, for he made little profit

who sold Joseph for counterfeit gold.

She said, and said it well: "Go, burn your cloak, Hafez."

O Lord, from whom had she learned to tell true coin from false?
