Last night our Pir came to the tavern

Hafez

Last night our Pir came from the mosque to the tavern;

companions of the Path, what is our course from now on?

How can we disciples turn our faces to the qibla, when

our Pir has turned his face towards the wine-seller's house?

In the tavern of the Path we will share one lodging,

for so our destiny was written on the first day of time.

If reason knew how happy the heart is, bound in his curl,

the wise would go mad to chase after our chain.

Your lovely face revealed to us a verse of grace;

since then there is nothing but grace and beauty in our commentary.

Will they ever, some night, take hold on your heart of stone,

our fiery sigh and the burning of our breast at dawn?

The arrow of our sigh flies beyond the heavens. Hafez, be silent!

Have mercy on your own soul, and beware of our arrow.
