Last night I saw the angels

Hafez

Last night I saw the angels knocking at the tavern door;

they kneaded the clay of Adam and cast it in the wine-measure.

The dwellers of heaven's sanctuary of veil and chastity

drank the wine of the drunken with me, a sitter by the road.

The sky could not carry the burden of the trust;

they cast the lot of the task in the name of me, the madman.

Excuse the war of the seventy-two sects, all of them:

since they did not see the truth, they took the road of fable.

Thanks be to God that peace has fallen between me and Him;

the Sufis, dancing, raised the cup of thanksgiving.

Fire is not that flame at which the candle laughs;

fire is what they set to the harvest of the moth.

No one has drawn the veil from the face of thought as Hafez has,

since first they combed the curls of speech with the pen.
