Ghazal · 14th century

Last night I said

Hafez

Last night I said I would put the passion for her face out of my head;

she said, "Where is the chain, so I can deal with this madman?"

I called her stature a cypress; she turned her head from me in anger.

Friends, my beloved is offended by the truth; what shall I do?

I spoke a careless word; my heart-stealer, forgive me;

grant me one playful glance, so I can bring my verse back into measure.

I bear a pale face, through no fault of mine, from that delicate temper;

saqi, give me a cup, so I can make my face the colour of roses.

O breeze from Leyli's dwelling, for God's sake, how long

shall I overturn the camp and turn its ruins into the Oxus?

I, who have found my way to the treasure of the Friend's endless beauty,

will make a hundred beggars like me as rich as Qarun from now on.

O moon of the auspicious conjunction, remember your servant Hafez,

so that I may pray for the fortune of that ever-growing beauty.
