Ghazal · 14th century

It is morning, saqi

Hafez

It is morning, saqi; fill a cup with wine;

the turning of the sky does not delay, so hurry.

Before this passing world falls to ruin,

ruin us with a cup of rose-coloured wine.

The sun of wine has risen from the east of the goblet;

if you want the means of pleasure, give up sleep.

On the day the wheel makes jugs from our clay,

take care to fill the bowl of our skull with wine.

We are not men of asceticism, repentance and pious show;

speak to us with a cup of clear wine.

The right deed, Hafez, is the worship of wine;

rise, and make a firm resolve to do the right deed.
