In the season of the tulip

Hafez

In the season of the tulip, take up the cup and be free of hypocrisy;

with the scent of the rose, be for a while the companion of the breeze.

I do not tell you to worship wine all year round:

drink wine for three months, and for nine be pious.

When the elder who walks love's path sends you to wine,

drink, and wait for the mercy of God.

If you long to reach the secret of the unseen, like Jamshid,

come, and be the companion of the world-revealing cup.

Though the work of the world, like the bud, is all tied up,

you, like the wind of spring, be one who loosens knots.

Seek faithfulness from no one; and if you will not listen,

go on seeking the Simorgh and the philosophers' stone in vain.

Do not become a follower of strangers' piety, Hafez,

but keep company with rends who are truly pure.
