In Praise of Wisdom

Ferdowsi

Wisdom is better than all that God has given;

it is right and just to praise wisdom.

Wisdom is the guide, and wisdom gladdens the heart;

wisdom takes you by the hand in both worlds.

From it comes your joy, and from it your sorrow;

from it your gain, and from it your loss.

A note for readers

From the section in praise of wisdom (kherad) near the opening of the Shahnameh, which follows the praise of God. Wisdom is one of the guiding ideas of the whole epic, and these couplets come a few lines after the famous saying ‘Whoever has knowledge has power’.

do not fret that there are no themes left.
