In love with a young face

Hafez

I am in love with the face of a fair one, young and newly grown,

and I asked God in prayer for the good fortune of this sorrow.

Lover, rend and gazer at beauty I am, and I say it openly,

so that you may know with how many talents I am adorned.

I feel ashamed of my stained Sufi cloak,

whose patches I have trimmed with a hundred tricks.

Burn sweetly in grief for him, O candle, for look, I too

have girded my waist and risen up for this same work.

In such bewilderment, all thrift in my affairs has slipped from my hand:

whatever I have taken from heart and soul, I have added to sorrow.

Like Hafez I will go to the tavern with my robe torn open,

in hope that my newly grown heart-stealer will take me in his arms.
