If you strolled like a cypress

Hafez

If, like a cypress, you were to stroll for a moment through a rose garden,

every rose would swallow a thorn in jealousy of your face.

From the unbelief of your curl, every ring holds a tumult;

from the magic of your eye, every corner holds someone sick.

O drunken eye of the beloved, do not fall asleep like my fortune,

for from every side a wakeful sigh is following you.

The coin of my life is scattered on the dust of your road,

though the coin of the soul is worth nothing in your eyes.

O heart, do not always boast of the curls of those who bind hearts;

once your judgement grows dark, what will ever open for you?

My head is gone, and still this matter did not reach its end;

my heart grew heavy, and you had no thought for the captive.

I told her, "Come into the middle of the circle, like the point."

She laughed and said, "Hafez, what kind of compass is this?"
