Ghazal · 14th century

If the wine-seller grants the rends their need

Hafez

If the wine-seller grants the rends their need,

God will forgive the sin and turn away misfortune.

Saqi, pour the wine in the cup of justice, so that the beggar

does not grow jealous and fill the world with trouble.

Truly, from these griefs the good news of safety will come,

if a wayfarer keeps faith with the pledge of trust.

Whether pain comes to you or ease, O wise one,

do not attribute it to anyone else, for these things God does.

In a workshop where reason and learning have no way,

why should a feeble understanding meddle?

Minstrel, tune your strings, for no one died before their hour,

and whoever does not sing this song is mistaken.

For us, whom the pain of love and the curse of the after-ache have killed,

either union with the Friend or pure wine will be the cure.

The soul was given for wine, and Hafez burned in love;

where is one with the breath of Jesus who will bring us back to life?
