If the gardener wants the rose

Hafez

If the gardener wants five days in the company of the rose,

he must bear the thorn of separation with the nightingale's patience.

O heart, caught in the bonds of her curl, do not moan at your confusion;

when the clever bird falls into the snare, it must have forbearance.

What has the world-burning rend to do with prudent calculation?

That is the business of kingdoms, which need planning and reflection.

To lean on piety and learning on the Path is unbelief;

though the traveller has a hundred skills, he must have trust in God.

With such a curl and such a face as hers, let gazing be forbidden

to anyone who still wants the jasmine's face and the hyacinth's curls.

One must put up with many airs from that drunken narcissus of hers,

as long as this frenzied heart wants that curl and forelock.

Saqi, how long this delay in passing the cup around?

When the round comes to the lovers, it must go on without end.

Who is Hafez, not to drink wine without the sound of the lute?

Why should the poor lover need so much ceremony?
