If the bird of fortune passes again

Hafez

If the bird of fortune passes this way again,

the beloved will come back and settle into union.

Though the eye has no store left of pearls and gems,

it will swallow its blood and find something to scatter as an offering.

Last night I asked, "Will her ruby lip be my cure?"

The hidden voice called out, "Yes, it will."

No one dares breathe a word of our story to her,

unless the morning breeze should pass by her ear.

I have set the falcon of my sight flying after a pheasant;

perhaps its image will call it back, and it will make a catch.

The city is empty of lovers; might it be that from somewhere

a man will step out of himself and get something done?

Where is a generous one, from whose feast of joy someone grieving

may drink a draught and drive the after-ache away?

Either faithfulness, or news of union with you, or the rival's end:

might the heavens bring about one of these two or three?

Hafez, if you do not leave her door, one day

she will pass by you from some corner.
