If I go home from this ruined lodging
Hafez
If from this ruined lodging I go back towards home,
wherever I go after that, I will go wise and sensible.
If from this journey I reach my homeland safely,
I have vowed to go straight from the road to the tavern.
To tell what was revealed to me on this path of seeking,
I will go to the cloister door with a lute and a cup.
If those who know love's road drink my blood,
I am worthless if I go complaining to a stranger.
From now on, my hand and the beloved's chain-like curl:
how long, how long must I go chasing the wants of a crazed heart?
If I see again the curve of her eyebrow like a prayer-niche,
I will bow in thanks and go to make my offering of gratitude.
Happy the moment when, like Hafez, devoted to the vizier,
I go merry from the tavern with the friend to my home.
