I Was Old and You Made Me Young

Rumi

I was old and passing away; you made me young.

I was dead; you brought me to life.

I was afraid that I would be lost on your road;

now I shall not be lost, for you have set your mark on me.

A note for readers

A quatrain from the rubais gathered in the Divan of Shams. Like many of Rumi’s quatrains it is addressed to a ‘you’ who may be Shams, the beloved or God. Quatrains in this tradition often travel under more than one poet’s name, so attributions are never certain.

One could speak for a lifetime of the beloved’s tresses;

do not fret that there are no themes left.
