I hope for kindness from the Friend

Hafez

I hold out hope of kindness from the Friend's presence:

I have done wrong, and my hope is in His pardon.

I know He will pass over my offence, for though

He has the face of a fairy, He has the nature of an angel.

We wept so much that everyone who passed by,

seeing our tears run on, said: "What stream is this?"

That mouth is nothing at all, and I can see no trace of it;

that waist is a hair, and I do not know what kind of hair.

I wonder how the image of her face has not left

my eyes, whose work each moment is washing and rinsing.

Without a word, your curl draws the heart along;

against your heart-drawing curl, who would dare to argue?

It is a lifetime since I caught a scent from your curl,

and from that scent, the nostrils of my heart are fragrant still.

Hafez, your scattered state is a sorry one, but

for the scent of the beloved's curl, your distraction suits you.
