I burn from your absence

Hafez

I am burning from your absence; turn your face from cruelty;

separation has become our trial; O Lord, turn the trial away.

The moon is parading on the sky's grey-green horse;

so that it tumbles headlong, set your foot in your own stirrup and ride.

Scatter your curls, that is, to spite the hyacinth,

and like the breeze, carry incense around the meadow.

To plunder reason and faith, step out merry and drunk;

tilt the cap on your head and swirl the robe about you.

O light of the drunkards' eyes, I am waiting in the very eye of expectation;

play the mournful harp, or pass a cup around.

Time is writing a fair line of down on his cheek;

O Lord, turn any ill writing away from our friend.

Hafez, from the fair-faced your fortune is no more than this;

if you are not content, turn back the decree of fate.
