Hoopoe of the morning breeze

Hafez

O hoopoe of the morning breeze, I am sending you to Sheba:

see from where to where I am sending you.

It is a pity for a bird like you to stay in this dust-heap of grief;

from here I send you to the nest of faithfulness.

On the road of love there is no stage of near or far:

I see you plainly, and I send you prayers.

Every morning and evening, a caravan of good prayers

I send you in the company of the north wind and the east.

So that the army of your grief may not lay waste the kingdom of the heart,

I send you my own dear soul as a pledge.

O you, absent from sight, who have become the heart's companion,

I say prayers for you and send you praise.

Look in your own face upon the wonder of God's making,

for I am sending you a mirror that shows God.

So that the minstrels may tell you of my longing,

I send you songs and ghazals with instrument and tune.

Saqi, come, for the voice from the unseen gave me the good news:

"Be patient with your pain, for I am sending you the cure."

Hafez, the song of our gathering is the praise of you:

hurry now, for I am sending you a horse and a robe.
