Happy Shiraz

Hafez

Happy Shiraz, and its matchless setting!

O Lord, keep it from decline.

A hundred blessings on our Roknabad,

whose clear water grants the life of Khizr.

Between Ja'farabad and the Mosalla

its north wind comes mingled with ambergris.

Come to Shiraz, and the grace of the Holy Spirit

seek from its people of perfection.

Who has spoken there the name of Egyptian sugar

that its sweet ones did not put to shame?

O breeze, of that merry, drunken gypsy

what news have you? How does that one fare?

If that sweet youth should shed my blood,

O heart, let it be lawful to him as mother's milk.

For God's sake, do not wake me from my sleep,

for I have a sweet seclusion with that image.

Hafez, since you were afraid of separation,

why did you not give thanks for the days of union?

A nightingale held in its beak a rose petal of lovely colour,

and with that petal and its song it made sweet, piteous laments.

A nightingale held a rose petal

A star shone out and became the moon of the gathering,

became friend and companion to our startled heart.

A star shone out

At dawn the nightingale told its tale to the east wind:

"See what love for the rose's face has done to us!"

At dawn the nightingale told the breeze
