Good news: the east wind has returned

Hafez

Good news, O heart: the east wind has come back again;

the hoopoe of glad tidings has returned from Sheba.

Raise once more, bird of dawn, your song of David,

for Solomon the rose has come back upon the wind.

Where is a knower who understands the lily's tongue,

to ask why it went away and why it has returned?

God-given grace has shown me kindness and favour,

for that moon-faced idol has come back by the road of faithfulness.

The tulip caught the scent of sweet wine from the breath of dawn;

it bore a brand upon its heart, and came back hoping for a cure.

My eyes were left waiting on the road of this caravan

until the camel-bell's sound came back to the ear of my heart.

Though Hafez knocked at the door of grievance and broke his vow,

see the beloved's grace: in kindness, came back through our door.

A nightingale held in its beak a rose petal of lovely colour,

and with that petal and its song it made sweet, piteous laments.

A nightingale held a rose petal

A star shone out and became the moon of the gathering,

became friend and companion to our startled heart.

At dawn the nightingale told its tale to the east wind:

"See what love for the rose's face has done to us!"

At dawn the nightingale told the breeze
