God's peace

Hafez

God's peace, as long as the nights return

and the lute strings answer one another,

upon the valley of Arak and those who dwell there,

and a house at Liwa, above the sands.

I am one who prays for the strangers of the world,

and I pray again and again, without ceasing.

To whatever stage he turns his face, O God,

keep him safe with your everlasting grace.

Do not lament, O heart, for in the chain of her curl

all disarray becomes a gathered calm.

Your line of down has added a hundred other beauties;

may your life last a hundred years of glory.

It is you who must remain; otherwise, it is a small thing,

the loss of the capital of rank and wealth.

Praise to that painter of power

who draws a crescent line around the moon.

Your love is my rest at every moment,

and your remembrance my companion in every state.

May the black core of my heart, until the Resurrection,

never be empty of longing and passion for you.

Where shall I find union with a king like you,

I, the ill-famed and carefree rend?

God knows what Hafez is seeking,

and God's knowing is enough; I need not ask.
