From Mineral to Angel

Rumi

I died as a mineral and became a plant;

I died as a plant and rose to the animal;

I died as an animal and became human:

why then should I fear? When was I made less by dying?

Once more I shall die as a man,

to lift up my head and wings among the angels;

and from the angel too I must leap the stream:

‘All things perish except His Face.’

Once more I shall be sacrificed from the angel

and become what cannot enter the imagination.

Then I shall become non-being; non-being, like an organ,

tells me, ‘To Him we are returning.’

A nightingale held in its beak a rose petal of lovely colour,

and with that petal and its song it made sweet, piteous laments.

A star shone out and became the moon of the gathering,

became friend and companion to our startled heart.

At dawn the nightingale told its tale to the east wind:

"See what love for the rose's face has done to us!"

At dawn the nightingale told the breeze
