Do not fault the rends

Hafez

Do not find fault with the rends, O ascetic of pure nature,

for the sins of others will not be written against you.

Whether I am good or bad, go and look to yourself:

in the end each person reaps what he has sown.

Everyone seeks the Beloved, sober or drunk;

everywhere is the house of love, mosque or synagogue.

My head in submission, and the brick on the tavern's threshold:

if the pretender does not grasp my words, tell him, "Head and brick!"

Do not make me despair of the grace decreed before time:

behind the veil, what do you know of who is good and who is bad?

It is not only I who fell from the veil of piety;

my father too let eternal paradise slip from his hand.

Hafez, if on the day of death you bring a cup to hand,

they will carry you straight from the tavern lane to paradise.

A nightingale held in its beak a rose petal of lovely colour,

and with that petal and its song it made sweet, piteous laments.

A nightingale held a rose petal

A star shone out and became the moon of the gathering,

became friend and companion to our startled heart.

At dawn the nightingale told its tale to the east wind:

"See what love for the rose's face has done to us!"

At dawn the nightingale told the breeze
