By the master's life

Hafez

By the master's life, by our old bond and our faithful covenant,

the companion of my dawn breath is a prayer for your good fortune.

My tears, which outdid the flood of Noah,

could not wash the image of your love from the tablet of my breast.

Make a bargain, and buy this broken heart,

which, broken as it is, is worth a hundred thousand whole ones.

The ant's tongue grew long against Asaf, and rightly so,

for the master lost the seal of Jamshid and did not look for it again.

O heart, do not give up hope of the Friend's endless kindness;

since you have boasted of love, stake your head, quick and nimble.

Strive for truth, so that the sun may be born from your breath,

for the first dawn turned black-faced through a lie.

Because of you I have become a madman of mountain and plain, and still

you do not loosen the band of my chain in pity.

Do not be hurt, Hafez, and do not look for constancy in heart-stealers;

what fault is it of the garden if this plant did not grow?
