Burn, O heart

Hafez

Burn, O heart, for your burning will get things done;

one midnight plea will turn away a hundred troubles.

Bear the reproach of the fairy-faced beloved as a lover should,

for one coquettish glance will make up for a hundred cruelties.

From the earthly kingdom to the heavenly, the veil is lifted

for whoever serves the world-revealing cup.

The physician of love has the breath of the Messiah and is kind, but

if he sees no pain in you, whom will he heal?

Leave your affair with your God, and keep your heart glad,

for if the one who opposes you shows no mercy, God will.

I am weary of my sleeping fortune; might it be that one who is awake

will say a prayer for me at the hour of the dawn Fatiha?

Hafez burned and caught no scent of the beloved's curl;

perhaps the breeze will guide him to this good fortune.
