Breeze, tell that graceful gazelle

Hafez

O east wind, tell that graceful gazelle, gently,

that it is you who sent us out to the mountains and the desert.

The sugar-seller, may his life be long, why

does he not ask after the sugar-tasting parrot?

Did the pride of your beauty not permit you, O rose,

to ask after the frenzied nightingale?

By good nature and kindness one can win the people of insight;

the wise bird is not caught with bonds and snares.

I do not know for what reason there is no hue of friendship

in the tall, dark-eyed, moon-faced ones.

When you sit with the beloved and measure out the wine,

remember the lovers who measure out only the wind.

No more than this can be said as a fault in your beauty:

that the way of love and faithfulness is not in that lovely face.

In heaven it is no wonder if, to the words of Hafez,

the song of Venus sets the Messiah dancing.

A nightingale held in its beak a rose petal of lovely colour,

and with that petal and its song it made sweet, piteous laments.

A nightingale held a rose petal

A star shone out and became the moon of the gathering,

became friend and companion to our startled heart.

At dawn the nightingale told its tale to the east wind:

"See what love for the rose's face has done to us!"

At dawn the nightingale told the breeze
