Breeze of the fortunate morning
Hafez
O morning breeze of good fortune, by that sign you know,
pass by a certain lane, at that hour you know.
You are the courier of the private secret, and my eyes watch your road;
out of kindness, not by command, go the way you know.
Say that my dear life has slipped from my hands; for God's sake,
from her soul-reviving ruby lip, grant that which you know.
I wrote these letters so that no stranger would understand;
you too, out of grace, read them the way you know.
The thought of your sword is to us as water to the thirsty;
you have taken your captive; kill as you know how.
How can I tie my hope to your gold-embroidered belt?
There is a subtle point, my love, in that middle, which you know.
Turkish and Arabic are one in this affair, Hafez;
tell the tale of love in whatever tongue you know.
