Breeze, bring a fragrance from the beloved's road

Hafez

O breeze, bring a fragrance from the dust of the beloved's road;

carry off the heart's sorrow, and bring good news of the one who holds it.

Tell some soul-reviving word from the Friend's mouth;

bring a letter of good news from the world of secrets.

So that I may perfume my senses with the grace of your breeze,

bring a breath of the fragrance of the beloved's breath.

By your faithfulness, bring the dust of that dear one's road,

without the dust of ill feeling that strangers raise.

To spite the rival, bring some dust from the Friend's path

to comfort this eye that weeps blood.

Rawness and simple-heartedness are not the way of those who stake their lives;

bring some news from that clever heart-stealer.

In thanks that you are happy, O bird of the meadow,

bring the captives of the cage good news of the rose garden.

My soul's palate has turned bitter with the patience I kept without the Friend;

bring some sweet coquetry from those sugar-raining lips.

For a long time my heart has not seen the face of its aim;

saqi, bring that cup that works like a mirror.

What is Hafez's patched cloak worth? Stain it with wine,

and then lead him drunk and ruined through the middle of the bazaar.
