At dawn the nightingale told the breeze

Hafez

At dawn the nightingale told its tale to the east wind:

"See what love for the rose's face has done to us!"

"Because of the colour of that face, blood fell into my heart,

and from that rose garden I was afflicted with thorns."

I am the slave of the aspiration of that dear one

who did good without show or hypocrisy.

I will no longer complain of strangers,

for whatever was done to me, that familiar one did.

If I hoped for something from the sultan, it was a mistake;

and if I sought faithfulness from the heart-stealer, she was cruel.

May that morning breeze be happy,

which brought a cure to the pain of those who sit up through the night.

It drew back the veil of the rose and the curl of the hyacinth,

and loosened the knot on the bud's tunic.

On every side the lover nightingale is lamenting,

and in their midst the east wind has taken its delight.

Take the good news to the lane of the wine-sellers:

Hafez has repented of hypocritical piety.

A nightingale held in its beak a rose petal of lovely colour,

and with that petal and its song it made sweet, piteous laments.

A star shone out and became the moon of the gathering,

became friend and companion to our startled heart.

Last night, at dawn, they set me free from sorrow,

and in that darkness of night they gave me the water of life.
