At dawn I sought an omen

Hafez

At dawn, intending to repent, I said I would seek an omen;

spring, the breaker of repentance, is arriving; what am I to do?

I will tell the honest truth: I cannot bear to see

my companions drinking wine while I only look on.

Like the rosebud, with laughing lips, remembering the king's gathering,

I will take up the cup and, in longing, tear my robe.

In the season of the tulip, have my head examined

if I withdraw from the middle of the feast of joy.

Since the rose of my desire has bloomed from the Friend's face,

I will send the enemy's head against the hard granite.

I am a beggar of the tavern, but see me when I am drunk:

I play the proud one with the sky and give orders to the stars.

I, who have no habit of refusing doubtful morsels,

why should I blame the wine-drinking rend?

I will seat an idol like a sultan on a throne of roses,

and make her collar and bracelets of hyacinth and jasmine.

Hafez has grown weary of drinking wine in secret;

to the sound of lute and reed I will make his secret known.
