At dawn, Gemini

Hafez

At dawn Gemini laid its sword-belt before me,

as if to say, "I am the king's servant," and I swear it too.

Come, saqi, for with the help of fortune that sets things right,

the wish I asked of God has been granted me.

Give me a cup, for once more, in the joy of the king's face,

old as I am, the longing of youth is in my head.

Do not lead me astray with praise of Khezr's clear water, for I

drink from the king's cup draughts of the pool of Kawthar.

O King, even if I raise the throne of virtue to the highest heaven,

I am the slave of this court and the poor one at this door.

I have drunk the drops of your banquet for a thousand years;

how could my nature, so used to it, leave its watering-place?

And if you do not believe these words from your servant,

I will bring a proof from the sayings of Kamal:

"If I tear my heart from you and take away my love,

on whom shall I cast that love? Where shall I take that heart?"

Mansur son of Mozaffar, the Ghazi, is my amulet,

and by this auspicious name I am victorious over my enemies.

My covenant of Alast was wholly with love for the king,

and along the highway of life I will keep to this covenant.

Since the heavens strung the Pleiades in the king's name,

why should I not string pearls of verse? In what am I less?

Like a falcon that has tasted food from the king's hand,

why would I ever turn to hunting doves?

O lion-catching king, what would be lost if,

in your shade, the kingdom of ease were granted me?

My verse, by the blessing of your praise, has conquered a hundred realms of hearts;

you would say my eloquent tongue is your sword.

If I passed through a rose garden like the morning breeze,

it was not for love of the cypress, nor desire for the pine.

I was catching your scent, and in memory of your face

the saqis of delight gave me a cup or two.

To be drunk on the juice of a grape or two is not your servant's way;

I am an aged elder, raised in the tavern.

I have many a quarrel with the course of the stars of heaven;

may the king's justice be my helper in this matter.

Thanks be to God that once more, at this lofty court,

the peacock of heaven hears the fame of my wing-feathers.

May my name be erased from the workshop of lovers

if I have any work other than love for you.

The lion's cub sprang to hunt my heart, and I,

lean or not, am still the lion's quarry.

O you whose lovers outnumber the motes of dust,

how could I reach union with you, I who am less than a mote?

Show me who denies the beauty of your face,

so that I may pluck out his eye with the knife of jealousy.

The shadow of the sun of sovereignty has fallen on me,

and now I have no need of the sun of the East.

The point of this exchange is only to liven the market;

I neither sell display nor buy flattery.
