A veil over the moon

Hafez

O you who cast a veil of musky down across the moon,

you were kind: you cast a shade over the sun.

What will the lustre and colour of your cheek do with us yet?

For now you have cast a lovely trick of a picture on the water.

You have carried off the ball of beauty from the fair ones of Khalkh; be glad.

Seek Kay Khosrow's cup, for you have thrown down Afrasiab.

Everyone has played at love with the candle of your face in some way;

of them all, it was the moth you threw into turmoil.

You laid the treasure of your love in our ruined heart;

you cast the shadow of fortune on this ruined corner.

Beware the lustre of that cheek, with which you left lions

thirsty-lipped and threw heroes into the water.

You bound the sleep of the wakeful, and then, with the picture of your image,

you cast the blame on the night-travelling troop of dreams.

You lifted the veil from your face for one glance on the stage,

and out of shame you sent houris and fairies behind the veil.

Drink wine from the world-seeing cup, for on Jamshid's throne

you have lifted the veil from the face of the longed-for beauty.

With the trickery of your languid narcissus and your wine-loving ruby

you have thrown the recluse Hafez into wine.

And to hunt the heart, you have thrown the chain of your curl around my neck

like the lasso of the king who is master of men's necks.

O judge with the glory of Darius, you who made the sun

cast its crown in reverence on the dust of your court:

Nosrat al-Din Shah Yahya, you who, with the edge of your sword,

threw the kingdom's enemy into water, like fire.
