A star shone out

Hafez

A star shone out and became the moon of the gathering,

became friend and companion to our startled heart.

My beauty, who never went to school nor learned to write,

with one glance became the teacher of a hundred masters.

For that fragrance, the lovers' sick heart, like the breeze,

was offered up to the eglantine cheek and the narcissus eye.

Now the Friend seats me at the head of the tavern bench:

see the city's beggar, who has become lord of the feast.

The dream of Khizr's water and Alexander's cup

came true in a draught drunk by Sultan Abu'l-Favaris.

The pleasure-house of love will now be built and flourish,

for the arch of my beloved's brow became its architect.

For God's sake, wipe the drops of wine from your lip,

for my mind is troubled by a thousand sins.

Your glance poured out for lovers such a wine

that learning fell unconscious and reason lost its senses.

Like gold, my verse is precious in its being; yes —

the favour of the fortunate became the alchemy of this copper.

Friends, turn your reins from the tavern road,

for Hafez went this way and came out penniless.

A nightingale held in its beak a rose petal of lovely colour,

and with that petal and its song it made sweet, piteous laments.

A nightingale held a rose petal

At dawn the nightingale told its tale to the east wind:

"See what love for the rose's face has done to us!"

At dawn the nightingale told the breeze

Last night, at dawn, they set me free from sorrow,

and in that darkness of night they gave me the water of life.

At dawn they set me free
