A settled mind and a gracious friend

Hafez

Whoever has a settled mind and a gracious beloved,

happiness has become his companion, and fortune sits beside him.

The threshold of love's sanctuary is far higher than reason;

only he kisses that threshold who carries his life in his sleeve.

Is her small, sweet mouth perhaps the kingdom of Solomon,

that the seal of her ruby ring holds the world beneath its stone?

Ruby lip and musky down: since she has that, and has this,

I take pride in my beloved, whose beauty has both that and this.

O man of wealth, do not look with contempt on the weak and frail,

for the seat of honour at the feast belongs to the beggar by the road.

While you are on the face of the earth, count your strength a gift,

for time keeps many who were powerless beneath the earth.

The prayers of the needy turn harm away from body and soul;

who sees good from a harvest that is ashamed of the gleaner?

O breeze, tell a hint of my love to that queen of the beautiful,

who has a hundred Jamshids and Kay Khosrows as her humblest slaves.

And if she says, "I do not want a penniless lover like Hafez,"

tell her that a sultan may keep a beggar as companion.
