A nightingale held a rose petal

Hafez

A nightingale held in its beak a rose petal of lovely colour,

and with that petal and its song it made sweet, piteous laments.

I said to it: "In the very midst of union, what is this lament and crying?"

It said: "The beloved's splendour has set us to this work."

If the beloved did not sit with us, there is no cause for complaint:

a fortunate king, he was ashamed of beggary.

Our pleading and our pride make no impression on the Friend's beauty;

happy is he whose fortune drew enjoyment from the delicate ones.

Rise, let us scatter our souls upon the pen of that Painter

who held all these wondrous images in the turning of the compass.

If you are a disciple of love's path, do not think of ill repute:

Shaykh San'an pawned his cloak at the house of the wine-seller.

Happy the time of that sweet qalandar who, in the stages of his journey,

kept the angels' rosary-chant within the circle of the zunnar.

The eye of Hafez, beneath the roof of that houri-natured one's palace,

had the way of "gardens beneath which rivers flow".

A star shone out and became the moon of the gathering,

became friend and companion to our startled heart.

A star shone out

At dawn the nightingale told its tale to the east wind:

"See what love for the rose's face has done to us!"

At dawn the nightingale told the breeze

Last night, at dawn, they set me free from sorrow,

and in that darkness of night they gave me the water of life.

At dawn they set me free
