A Night Like Jet
Ferdowsi
A night like jet, its face washed in pitch;
not Mars to be seen, nor Saturn, nor Mercury.
The moon had decked herself in a different way
and made ready to cross the court of heaven;
lingering, she had grown dark in her dwelling,
her waist made thin, her heart grown narrow.
Three parts of her crown had turned to lapis,
and she had left the air to rust and dust.
The army of dark night, over plain and meadow,
had spread a carpet of raven's feathers.
On every side it looked to me like Ahriman,
like a black snake with its jaws flung open.
The sky was like steel eaten by rust;
you would say it had smeared its face with pitch.
A note for readers
The opening of the prologue to the romance of Bizhan and Manizheh, one of the most admired descriptive passages in the Shahnameh. The poet, sleepless on a pitch-black night, calls for a lamp; a beloved companion brings a candle and wine, and then reads him the story from an old book. Ahriman is the spirit of evil in Iranian tradition.
