A lover of fair faces

Hafez

I am a lover of fair faces and of hair that steals the heart,

dazed by drunken eyes and by pure, unmixed wine.

You said: tell me one word of the secret of the first covenant;

I will tell you once I have drunk two cups.

I am Adam from paradise, but on this journey

I am, for now, a captive of love for moon-faced young ones.

In love there is no escape from music and burning;

I stand like a candle; do not frighten me with fire.

Shiraz is the mine of ruby lips and the quarry of beauty;

I am a penniless jeweller, and that is why I am troubled.

I have seen so many drunken eyes in this city

that truly, I drink no wine now, and yet I am merry.

It is a city full of the charms of houris on all six sides;

I have nothing, or I would buy all six.

If fortune helps me carry my baggage to the Friend,

the tresses of houris will sweep the dust from my carpet.

Hafez, the bride of my talent longs to be seen;

I have no mirror, and that is why I sigh.
