A lovely idol in the hidden room

Hafez

In the hidden chamber of pleasure I keep a lovely idol,

for whose curl and cheek I have set a horseshoe in the fire.

Lover, rend and wine-drinker I am, and I say it aloud,

and all these honours I owe to that fairy-faced houri.

If in this way you keep me without home or order,

with my dawn sighs I will keep your curl in disarray.

If the Friend's verdigris down opens on such a face,

I will keep my yellow face painted with bloody tears.

If you will set foot in the house of the rends,

I have sweet verse for sweetmeats and pure, unmixed wine.

Bring the arrow of your glance and the rope of your curl, for I

have many battles with my wounded, trouble-bearing heart.

Hafez, since the sorrow and the joy of the world are passing,

it is better that I keep my heart content.
